Reception (EYFS)
Reception children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework. Learning is organised through the seven areas of learning.
Children learn through:
At Yaxley Infant School, we recognise that every child is unique. We provide a nurturing, stimulating environment where children are encouraged to be curious, resilient and independent learners. Learning opportunities are carefully planned to build knowledge and skills whilst fostering creativity, communication and confidence.
Children benefit from a balance of adult-directed activities, small-group teaching and opportunities to explore independently through continuous provision. We value learning both indoors and outdoors and ensure children have access to rich and engaging experiences that support their development across all areas of learning.
Assessment is ongoing and based on observations, discussions, children's work and interactions throughout the day. These assessments help staff identify next steps in learning and ensure that all children make strong progress.
During the first six weeks of school, all Reception children complete the statutory Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA). This short assessment provides a starting point from which progress throughout primary school can be measured.
At the end of the Reception year, teachers complete the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFSP). This assessment summarises each child's attainment against the Early Learning Goals and provides a picture of their development and readiness for Year 1.
We value the important role parents and carers play in their child's education. We work closely with families to share learning, celebrate achievements and support children's development both in school and at home.

Together, we aim to ensure every child feels happy, confident and ready to achieve their full potential.
At Yaxley Infant School, we place great importance on ensuring every child makes a positive and confident start to school. Our transition process begins well before children join us, with staff visiting local preschools and nurseries during the summer term to meet children in their familiar environment, speak with key workers and gather valuable information about their interests, strengths and individual needs. Children and families are invited to attend play sessions in school, helping them become familiar with their new classroom, teachers and routines.
For children with additional needs, our SENDCo provides extra transition support, including additional visits and meetings with families and professionals where appropriate. We highly value our home visit programme, which gives staff dedicated one-to-one time with each family. These visits allow us to build positive relationships, learn more about each child and give parents the opportunity to discuss any questions, concerns or important information in a relaxed setting.
To support a smooth and successful start, children attend school on a part-time basis during their first week. This enables them to settle into the environment gradually, receive greater adult support and attention, develop friendships and become confident with the routines and expectations of school life. Our carefully planned transition programme helps children feel safe, secure and ready to learn from their very first day.
