In Year 1, children build upon the foundations established in the Early Years Foundation Stage and begin to follow the National Curriculum. Learning is designed to be engaging, purposeful and ambitious, helping children to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to become successful learners.

Reading and Phonics

Reading remains a key priority in Year 1. Children participate in daily phonics lessons and have regular opportunities to read individually, in groups and as a class. We aim to develop fluent readers who enjoy books and can confidently apply their phonics knowledge.

Mathematics

Learning is supported through practical activities, exploration and problem-solving opportunities.

Our Approach to Learning

We recognise that children develop at different rates and continue to benefit from practical, hands-on learning experiences. Teaching in Year 1 includes a balance of direct instruction, collaborative learning and opportunities for independent application.

In mixed-age classes, children may also access elements of continuous provision to encourage independence, creativity and the application of skills across the curriculum.

Assessment

Assessment takes place throughout the year through observations, discussions, classwork and teacher assessment. This helps staff to identify next steps in learning and provide appropriate support and challenge for all learners.

Teachers regularly monitor progress in reading, writing and mathematics to ensure every child achieves their full potential.

In June, pupils complete the statutory Phonics Screening Check. This national assessment measures children's ability to apply their phonics knowledge when reading both real and pseudo (alien) words. The check helps teachers identify pupils who may require additional phonics support. Children who do not meet the expected standard will have the opportunity to retake the assessment in Year 2. Assessment information is used to inform teaching, celebrate achievement and ensure that every child is making strong progress throughout the year. We regularly share children's progress and attainment with parents and carers and work in partnership to support each child's learning journey.

Working in Partnership with Parents

We value the important role that parents and carers play in supporting children's education. Families can support learning at home by:

• Reading regularly with their child.
• Practising phonics and common exception words.
• Supporting homework activities.
• Encouraging curiosity and discussion about learning.
• Promoting independence and resilience.

Together, we aim to ensure that every child develops the confidence, knowledge and skills needed for a successful transition into Year 2.
