Massage in schools programme

Massage in Schools Programme (MISP)

At Yaxley Infant School, children's wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. As part of our commitment to promoting positive mental health and emotional wellbeing, we use the Massage in Schools Programme (MISP) alongside our wider wellbeing and mindfulness approaches.

What is the Massage in Schools Programme?

MISP is a well-established programme of positive touch and peer massage for children aged 4 to 12 years. It is used in schools across the UK and around the world to support children's emotional wellbeing, confidence and social development.

Children remain fully clothed and learn a series of simple massage movements on the back, shoulders, arms and head. Each movement is linked to a symbol and accompanied by calming music. All sessions are led by trained members of staff who teach the programme in a safe and supportive environment.

MISP is based on the principles of choice and respect. Before every session, children are asked for permission and can choose whether or not they would like to participate. Their decision is always respected. Children who choose not to take part still benefit from the calm and relaxing atmosphere created during the session.

Benefits of MISP

Research and experience have shown that MISP can have many positive benefits for children, including:

  • Increased calmness and relaxation
  • Improved concentration and focus
  • Greater self-esteem and confidence
  • Development of positive friendships and social skills
  • Increased awareness of personal space and positive touch
  • Support for emotional wellbeing and self-regulation
  • Enhanced respect for others and understanding of consent

The programme complements our Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) curriculum by helping children develop important life skills, including empathy, respect and self-awareness.

How Does It Work?

Children have a designated massage partner chosen by their class teacher. This helps to support positive relationships and encourages the development of social skills within the classroom.

Sessions are short, enjoyable and relaxing, providing children with an opportunity to reset and refocus during the school day.

When Does MISP Take Place?

MISP sessions take place daily following lunchtime and last approximately 5 to 7 minutes. All classes participate at the same time, creating a calm and positive atmosphere across the school.
