Maths

At Yaxley Infant School, our intent for Mathematics is to foster a deep and lasting understanding of mathematical concepts in all pupils. We aim to nurture a love of mathematics by making learning engaging, meaningful and accessible, while recognising the unique strengths, needs and experiences of every child.

.We strive to:

  • Developing Number Sense: Ensuring pupils have a strong grasp of number concepts, including counting, recognising numbers, and understanding their relationships.
  • Encouraging Problem-Solving: Instilling confidence in pupils to approach mathematical problems with curiosity and resilience. We want them to view challenges as opportunities to learn.
  • Building Practical Skills: Linking mathematical learning to real-life contexts and practical applications, helping pupils appreciate the relevance of maths in everyday life.
  • Promoting Mathematical Language: Encouraging the use of precise mathematical vocabulary to express ideas clearly and enhance communication skills within the subject.
  • Inclusive Learning: Supporting all learners, including those with additional needs or differing abilities, to achieve their full potential in mathematics through tailored instruction and support.

We use the White Rose Maths scheme to support the teaching and learning of mathematics. White Rose provides a carefully sequenced curriculum that develops children's fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills through small, manageable steps. Lessons use practical resources, pictorial representations and mathematical discussion to help children build a secure understanding of key concepts. Parents can further support their child's learning at home through the White Rose parent resources, which provide helpful videos and activities linked to the learning taking place in school.
