Art and Design

Curriculum Intent

At Yaxley Infant School children will be given high quality planned opportunities to explore and develop creativity within Art and Design. Children will be encouraged to develop a wide range of art and design techniques using colour (value), texture, line (pattern), shape, form and space as set out in the National Curriculum. Alongside this they will learn to use a range of materials creatively to both design and make their own collaborative products, including an increasing sense of importance to detail. They will foster a belief that ‘everyone is and artist’ and that designing is a process in which it is ok to make ‘mistake’, change our minds and develop the final product from its original design.

Curriculum Implementation

A KS1 curriculum planning document is in place alongside a whole school progression of skills document and glossary. This is in place to ensure consistency in teaching of Art and Design and to make sure there is consistency across the whole school. When following this, staff have good subject knowledge and are aware they can ask BL for support and CPD if needed. Lessons are planned from this document and a ‘Topic Planning Page’ is in place for all KS1 to support children’s learning journey through their lessons, supporting their understanding of larger Art concepts. Assessment is ongoing through regular AfL and children are supported based on their needs. This ensures learning of skills and knowledge is embedded and checked regularly. End of Year assessment data is collected and used to support next steps in planning for the following academic year.

KS1 curriculum is planned around a two year rolling cycle of child initiated themes.

Each theme has a chosen ‘Artist’ and a key piece of Artwork by this artist to focus on.

The key art elements of colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space are taught through Drawing, Painting and 3D sculpture.

Curriculum Impact

The impact on children’s learning can be seen through their enjoyment, pupil voice and achievements in Art and Design, including their creative explorations outside of Art and Design lessons. Regular monitoring and evaluation of the subject is carried out to ensure consistency, enjoyment and progress. This is done through sketchbook looks, staff and pupil questionnaires, learning walks and end of year data.
