Design and Technology

Curriculum Intent

At Yaxley Infant School children will be given high quality planned opportunities to explore and develop creativity within Design and Technology. Children will be encouraged to develop a wide range of design techniques focussing on designing, making and evaluating products as set out in the National Curriculum. Alongside this they will learn to select and use appropriate tools safely and effectively to assist in making a product. Children will learn where a range of food comes from and develop an understanding of the basic principles of a healthy and varied diet. In all areas of DT, children are encouraged to consider the effectiveness of their designs and requirements of the product. They will foster a belief that ‘everyone is and artist’ and that designing is a process in which it is ok to make ‘mistake’, change our minds and develop the final product from its original design.

Impact

The impact on children’s learning can be seen through their enjoyment, pupil voice and achievements in Design and Technology, including their design, product and evaluation. Regular monitoring and evaluation of the subject is carried out to ensure consistency, enjoyment and progress. This is done through floorbooks, staff and pupil questionnaires, learning walks and end of year data.

Implementation

A KS1 curriculum planning document is in place alongside a whole school progression of skills document and glossary. This is in place to ensure consistency in teaching of Design and Technology and to make sure there is consistency across the whole school. When following this, staff have good subject knowledge and are aware they can ask D&T subject leader for support and CPD if needed. Assessment is ongoing through regular AfL and children are supported based on their needs. This ensures learning of skills and knowledge is embedded and checked regularly. End of Year assessment data is collected and used to support next steps in planning for the following academic year.
